Xu Fengnian is the son of the most powerful military duke in the kingdom — a man universally described as a living god of war. Xu Fengnian is described as a useless playboy. The show's first surprise is that both descriptions are accurate. Armed with a horse, a mute warrior companion, and an inexhaustible talent for making dangerous enemies into reluctant friends, he travels the jianghu (the martial world) in a story that is ostensibly a coming-of-age and is actually a prolonged meditation on what it costs to inherit power from someone whose power exceeded human scale. Zhang Ruoyun's performance is the best wuxia lead role in a decade.
