Neon Genesis Evangelion

1995 26 episodes TV Tokyo / Gainax Mecha Sci Fi Psychological Drama Action Netflix

Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari is summoned by his estranged father to pilot a giant bio-mechanical robot against alien monsters called Angels. It sounds like a typical mecha show — it's not. Evangelion is a psychological deconstruction of everything: heroism, masculinity, depression, human connection, and the mecha genre itself. Shinji doesn't want to be a hero; he wants someone to tell him it's okay to exist. The most influential anime of the '90s, and one of the most analyzed works of art in any medium.
